My First Term at Oxford - Yihao

I am from Manchester and I am currently studying Chemistry with Foundation Year at Exeter College.

Yihao - Chemistry Student

What aspects of the course are you enjoying?

One of the most captivating aspects of the Chemistry course at Oxford is its depth and breadth. The hands-on laboratory sessions have been a highlight, offering a practical dimension to theoretical concepts. Moreover, the opportunity to engage in thought-provoking discussions with peers and expert faculty during tutorials has been intellectually stimulating.

What aspects of the course do you find challenging?

The rigorous academic curriculum demands a high level of dedication and time management. Complex problem-solving within maths particularly under timed conditions, is highly demanding and I often find myself staring at a problem for far too long. Finding a balance between grasping complex theories and managing problem sheets has been a continuous learning curve for me.

What does a typical week in your first term look like?

During my busiest week, I usually have three lectures, three classes, three tutorials, and a three-hour lab. Lectures last an hour each, while classes and tutorials extend to 1.5 hours. Additionally, there are sporadic Preparation for Undergraduate Study events in the evenings which sometimes feature talks that students can attend.

How are you managing your studies and free time?

Managing my studies and free time has been crucial for maintaining a healthy balance. To combat the intensive workload with multiple problem sheets a week, I have established a structured study routine, prioritising tasks and adhering to a disciplined schedule. However, it is equally essential to allow for moments of relaxation and rejuvenation, so I have also integrated short breaks throughout long study sessions.

What have you enjoyed doing outside of your studies?

From leisurely strolls along the River Thames to visits to historical landmarks like the Bodleian Library and Christ Church College, each experience has enriched my understanding of this culturally rich city. It seems as if you can capture images of everything in your surroundings. The sheer quantity of photos I have taken is quite astonishing, it seems as if each place is worthy of being captured through the lens of a camera.

What do you think of Oxford as a city?

Oxford, with its cobblestone streets and captivating architecture, exudes an aura of history and scholarly heritage. The fusion of old-world charm and modern amenities creates a unique and inviting atmosphere. The city's cultural diversity, bustling markets, and an array of cafes and bookshops make it a delightful place to explore and call home during term time.

What is your highlight of the first term?

Stepping into my first formal dinner event at Somerville College during Orientation week marked a truly unique and exhilarating experience, especially as everything was completely unfamiliar to me. The grandeur of the occasion, from the elegant setting to the formalities observed, added to the sense of novelty and excitement. Moreover, collaboration with fellow students has been an incredibly fulfilling aspect of my academic journey. Exchanging ideas, collectively navigating the challenges of academia, and supporting one another has enriched the overall learning environment.

What are you looking forward to next term?

I am excited about delving deeper into specialised areas of Chemistry and exploring more advanced topics, expanding my knowledge base. In addition, I am looking forward to seizing new opportunities that may arise, further immersing myself in the academic and cultural tapestry of Oxford while trying my best to continue striking a balance between academic pursuits and personal growth.
