What I’m enjoying most about the course

One of the most captivating aspects of studying Chemistry at Oxford has been the depth and breadth of the course. I’ve particularly enjoyed the hands-on laboratory sessions, which add a practical dimension to the theoretical concepts we cover in lectures. Being able to apply what I’ve learned in a real lab setting makes everything feel far more tangible.

I’ve also found the tutorials to be incredibly stimulating. Engaging in thought-provoking discussions with my peers and expert faculty has pushed me to think more critically and explore ideas in greater depth. Those small-group conversations are often where concepts truly click for me.

The course is undeniably rigorous and demands a high level of dedication and time management. I’ve found the complex problem-solving—particularly in maths under timed conditions—to be especially demanding. There are definitely moments when I find myself staring at a problem for far too long, trying to work through it.

Balancing the need to fully grasp complex theories while keeping up with problem sheets has been a continuous learning curve. I’m constantly refining how I approach my workload and manage my time.

What a typical week looks like

During my busiest weeks, I usually have three lectures, three classes, three tutorials, and a three-hour lab. Lectures last an hour each, while classes and tutorials extend to an hour and a half.

On top of that, there are occasional Preparation for Undergraduate Studies events in the evenings, which sometimes feature talks that students can attend. Altogether, it makes for a full and engaging schedule.

Balancing studies and free time

Managing my studies alongside my free time has been crucial in maintaining a healthy balance. With multiple problem sheets each week, I’ve had to establish a structured study routine, prioritising tasks and sticking to a disciplined schedule.

At the same time, I’ve learned that it’s equally important to allow myself moments of relaxation and rejuvenation. I try to integrate short breaks into long study sessions to avoid burnout and stay productive.

Outside of my studies, I’ve loved exploring Oxford. From leisurely strolls along the River Thames to visiting historical landmarks like the Bodleian Library and Christ Church College, each experience has deepened my appreciation of this culturally rich city.

I’ve also taken an astonishing number of photos. It often feels as though everything around me is worth capturing: every building, every street, every view seems to tell a story.

Oxford as a city

Oxford, with its cobblestone streets and captivating architecture, truly exudes a sense of history and scholarly heritage. I’m constantly struck by the fusion of old-world charm and modern amenities, which creates such a unique and inviting atmosphere.

The city’s cultural diversity, bustling markets, and abundance of cafés and bookshops make it a delightful place to explore - and a wonderful place to call home during term time.

The highlight of my first term

One of the most memorable moments of my first term was stepping into my first formal dinner at Somerville College during Orientation Week. Everything was completely unfamiliar to me, which made the experience both unique and exhilarating. The grandeur of the occasion, the elegant setting and the formalities observed, only heightened that sense of novelty and excitement.

Another highlight has been collaborating with fellow students. Exchanging ideas, navigating academic challenges together, and supporting one another has been an incredibly fulfilling part of my journey so far. It has truly enriched the overall learning environment.

Looking ahead to next term

Next term, I’m excited to delve deeper into specialised areas of Chemistry and explore more advanced topics, continuing to expand my knowledge base. I’m also looking forward to embracing any new opportunities that arise, further immersing myself in both the academic and cultural life of Oxford, while continuing to strike a balance between academic pursuits and personal growth.
